Although I found the content of Mansoor Ladha's book on the Aga Khan to be quite interesting and informative, unfortunately it is not the biography of the Isma'ili Imam that I had hoped it would be. Mr Ladha provides us with numerous enlightening anecdotes regarding the Imam and quotes many meaningful passages from the Imam's speeches and interviews and from speeches by various public figures in praise of the Imam and the work of the institutions of the Imamate such as the AKDN, but in reality this book is at least as much about the long-established Isma'ili community in East Africa where Mr Ladha himself was born; how the Isma'ilis and other Asians were expelled from Uganda by Idi Amin in many also fled from rising nationalism in neighbouring Kenya and Tanzania ; how they emigrated to Canada, the UK, and the US; and the commendable success of the Isma'ilis in integrating into Canadian life Mr Ladha himself exemplifying this.

Being myself a Canadian and an resident of Alberta like Mr Ladha, it was enjoyable, enlightening, and encouraging to hear the success stories of people from my own part of the world. Mr Ladha was a journalist and the book is intentionally pitched at a "popular" level, which makes it an easy read. For all this content I found the book to be a worthwhile read.
Sadly, I must now temper my overall positive opinion of the book's content as I was also extremely disappointed by the extraordinarily poor quality of the editing of the text, something which I found quite remarkable given that Mr Ladha had been a copy editor, but to be frank, this is undoubtedly the most poorly edited book I have ever read and I am 75 years old and a life-long reader.
There are innumerable errors of spelling, punctuation, and word choice, such as referring to the Ismaili Volunteer Corps having "begun their volunteer stunt" presumably "stunt" should read "stint". There are a couple of rather egregious bloopers in passages quoted from the Imam's speeches, a level of inattentiveness that I personally found shocking I was able in a matter of minutes to find the text of these speeches online and ink-amend the errors in my copy : on pg 18, where the Imam said "the actual ownership of wealth is in no way criticisable", the book has "civilizable" in place of "criticisable"; on pg 23, where the Imam said "some of civilization's peak achievements", the book has "peach" for "peak".
There are also factual errors, such as on pgwhere the book quotes from a lecture by Prince Rahim Aga Khan in London and says this lecture was delivered in September ! The lecture, which I found online, was indeed delivered by Prince Rahim, but inobviously not in Prince Rahim was born in There are also numerous places where sentences or even paragraphs are repeated - for example, material quoted on pg is repeated verbatim on pp Tools Tools.
