Ania taught us that art is central to being human. She recognised that to be an artist is also to be a teacher. You opened up through your poetry vistas that spoke to us of the vitality of difference and of envisaging the possibility of beauty in the midst of trauma, jagged loss and incomprehension.
In the context of our literature classes, the transformative power of your poems to our non-Anglo students was electric: they would beam with recognition. Ania, you have left us with a precious legacy of the big beautiful — Joseph Pugliese and Suvendrini Perera.

Ania burst into my life in undergraduate studies at Deakin in the early 80s when I encountered her work and that of P. In a word — electrifying. Thank you so much for this obituary for Ania; so moving, it brought me to tears. Never met her sadly but so, so love her work. Horse is a triumph. Vale, Ania — what a gift to art, and what a loss.
Princes Pier at Port Melbourne, is one of the iconic places her and I frequently drove to after work. Once she went on sick leave, I too had a taste of her distancing. Such sad news. I will never forget her Short Story classes at RMIT, around 10 years ago now, and yes the wild polarising of her students. The processes of thinking and reading are aural.
Other people have read my work in a different way. But its open to interpretation. In discussing her final work, HorseWalwicz described how she drew her inspiration from a dream. But I think because I was going into the fairytale territory, and the fairytale area is an area of magic. In addition to creating poetry, Walwicz was also a performance artist, often recording many of her original works.
Many of her recordings are available online, including selections from her award-winning poetry. In a piece, 'Transgressing Language', Lyn McCredden writes: "This impulse to return to origins, to childhood and new beginnings, is a recurrent one in Walwicz's work. Language is the possibility of renewal, of writing the self. It may be a treacherous or dangerous womb, but it is in its dangerousness, its sharpness, that it rewards the experimental poet who, through repetition, insistence, flights of lyrical ania walwicz biography and childlike simplicity, incants the new self.
Questions of control are thematised, as the poet struggles with language for the desired effect, the new languaged self. But it can also be argued that poet and language seem to be coming from the same angle, in a relationship of concurrence, confronting the more conventional.

She was witty, wicked, hilarious, contrary, obstinate, infuriating, and utterly utterly irreplaceable. Performing to support the book, she would don a beard or a mask to evoke new characters on stage. Always a private woman, Ania Walwicz passed away on 29 September though the news was only announced last week. As as well as family members, she is survived by a generation of writers who she taught and nurtured.

Share Icon. Walwicz passed away 29 September, though news broke on Friday prompting a flood of tributes. He has worked in digital leadership roles in the cultural sector for more than 10 years including at the National Library of Australia, National Museum of Australia and the Wheeler Centre. Ania Walwicz spent her childhood in Poland, coming to Australia in where she attended the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne.
Her writing tends toward an impressionistic, stream of consciousness exploration of inner states. It also exploits 'appropriative' or 'sampling' techniques of production. Apart from publication in numerous anthologies, journals and several books her work has been performed by La Mama Theatre, the Sydney Chamber Choir and more recently set to music by ChamberMade.
