Inten years after the peace accord known as the Good Friday Agreement, I went back to follow up what changes peace had made. I had an assignment for The Times to track down some of the people I had photographed inwhen I had first come to Northern Ireland, and to photograph and interview them. This work is part of this book and made me think about the many photographs I had taken around The Troubles that had never seen the light of day.
Maybe some of those photographs surplus to the Exit project still had something worthwhile to add. I began to see that my work in Northern Ireland had always been a celebration of the resilience and unyielding way that the Catholic community resisted. Despite the sectarian killings, despite the illegal process of internment, they stood firm and I felt respect for this robust spirit of endurance, tempered by humour.
