The Philadelphian Society grew under her charge, until they were buffeted by mobs in London. Jane Leade died in her eighty-first year and is buried in the non-conformist cemetery, Bunhill Fields, in London. By contextualising her and drawing out the nature of her devotions this new book draws attention to her as a figure in her own right.

Previous studies have tended to reduce her to one example within a certain tradition, but as this work clearly demonstrates she was in fact a much more complicated character who did not conform to any one particular tradition.

This is a brilliant, fascinating read, one that I've been eager to devour since time and sanity excluded seventeenth-century women from my MA's focus. Lead ea mystic, prolific writer and sometime leader of the Philadelphian Society, has remained relatively overlooked by historians despite despite some pretty remarkable attributes.

It's easy to forgive Hirst's occasionally clumsy writing on account of the information she conveys. Her remarks on medieval and early modern women's relationship to Christianity in particular resonated with me: "the Christian religion, it can be argued, justified the subordination of women. However, a significant number of women were able to find in divine illumination space for self-determination and purpose" The empowerment and sense of self that the desire for oneness with the divine invoked in women like Lead e may seem unexpected now, but makes perfect sense given the legacy of medieval mystics and goddess figures like Sophia, who features prominently to a rather heterodox extent in her writings.

I'm very interested in hermaphroditic and esoteric perceptions of the divine, and there is much to think about here. Anyway, really beautiful stuff, and highly recommended if you're at all interested in the relationship between magic and religion, though this is an scholarly work from Ashgate and priced accordingly.
