In summerMcEntee went west to visit his sister and her husband, who held the command of Fort Halleck in Nevada. Though he professed himself much impressed by the western scenery and subsequently painted a few western scenes and also a few Mexican views indicating, perhaps, an additional tripunlike Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran, he was not converted to the school of grand spaces.
In he visited Europe, painting much in Italy. Aside from his paintings, McEntee's enduring legacy are the detailed journals he kept from the early s until his death. In his writings McEntee records a detailed account of Hudson River School artists, their day-to-day life, gossip and personal reflections, and the overall arc of the American art world in the second half of the 19th century.
He discusses his artistic successes and trials, particularly as money becomes more scarce with the decline in popularity of Hudson River School art. McEntee's journals are now kept by the Archives of American Art, a research center within the Smithsonian Institution. Five volumes of these diaries, from tohave been digitally scanned, transcribed, and can be browsed in their entirety in the Jervis McEntee Diaries Online.

He died in Rondout, where he had continued to maintain a summer home. Deviating from the optimism of much mid-century American painting, the somber tone of his work appealed to the introspective mood of the later nineteenth century. Although the spirit of his work in the s and s often recalls Barbizon feeling for rural life, McEntee's continuing attention to nature's specifics seemed old-fashioned as the Hudson River School abated.
For nearly the final two decades of his life, McEntee kept a detailed diary now owned by the Archives of American Art that records his life and thoughts within the context of New York art life.
