He was born in Pike County, Mississippion December 20, His birth name was Otha Ellas Bates. In his mother sent him to live with his cousin, Guisse McDaniel in Chicago. At the age of ten he became very interested in music. He began studying the violin and guitar at Foster High School. Bo was very active as a teenager and even took boxing lessons.

He played violin for the Ebenezer Baptist Church Orchestra. Diddley played songs on street corners with his friend Jerome Green, and Diddley worked construction for extra money. By October,Bo had a group. He hooked up with Jerome Green t o record two of what became Diddley hits The two hits were put out on Checker and sky rocketed all the way to number two on national R and B charts.

Bo Diddley also appeared on Ed Sullivan television shows. Even as a youth, Bo shirked convention in favor of innovation. At the age of 12, he built his first guitar out of whatever materials he could find in true Bo Diddley fashion and set off playing on street corners, talent shows, and outside of clubs he and his band mates of The Langley Avenue Jive Cats were not old enough to enter.

Helping others was as important to Bo Diddley both in his personal life and his music career as he would go on to serve two years as deputy sheriff in New Mexico and serving as a visionary of producer, songwriter, recorder, and teacher other talented artists.
