The youngest of five brothers, Escher had an ability to visualize distinct spatial patterns from childhood, and, though not faring well in much of his earlier studies, he attended Haarlem's School for Architectural and Decorative Arts. There, Escher decided to take up graphic arts under the recommendation of his mentor, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita.
His earlier work included nudes and innovative portraiture captured in woodcuts, linoleum cuts and lithographs, such as the interconnected "Eight Heads" Escher traveled to the Mediterranean in the early s and was profoundly influenced by the wonders of the Moor-designed Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. He met Jetta Umiker in ; they married the following year, going on to have three children.
Establishing a home in Rome with his family, Escher worked on engravings and prints that captured natural landscapes and architecture, startlingly playing with perspective, orientation and shadow. He also created more human-oriented work, including a rendering of his wife and several self-portraits, such as 's "Hand With Reflecting Sphere. Already after a week he informs his father that he wants to quit his architecture lessons and focus on studying graphic arts.
He is supported in this by his teacher Samuel Jesserun de Mesquita, to whom he has shown his drawings and linocuts. After completing his school, he travels for a long time through Italy, where he meets his wife Jetta Umiker and whom he marries in They go to Rome, where they live until During these 11 years M. Escher travels every year through Italy where he makes drawings and sketches that he later uses in his studio for his lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings.
For example, the background in the lithograph Waterfall comes from his Italian period. Upon Escher's death, his three sons dissolved the Foundation, and they became partners in the ownership of the art works. Inthis holding was sold to an American art dealer and the Hague Museum. The Museum obtained all of the documentation and the smaller portion of the art works.
The copyrights remained the possession of Escher's three sons — who later sold them to Cordon Art, a Dutch company. Control was subsequently transferred to The M. Escher Company B. A related entity, the M. Escher Foundation of Baarn, promotes Escher's work by organizing exhibitions, publishing books and producing films about his life and work.
